For April 10, 2025, I published Michigan Travel Tips #252, and it was a special edition of the monthly document, and it did not report on places to see in Michigan, and what it did was pass along information about, for one, camper vans, such as the type that a person might make from a simple van in a home garage.  While writing that document, I was thinking about what I might do if I were to make a camper van (doing a van conversion).  Originally, that document did not say much about shower systems; now the document has information about shower systems (it has been updated).  If I were to make a camper van (doing a van conversation of some type), I would give the camper van a recirculating-shower system, one that is a dual system, which is a system in which it can work as a recirculating shower and as a traditional shower (the latter of which can be used if the van is hooked up to a water supply at a campground-like place).  In essence, a recirculating shower uses only a few gallons of water for each shower, and I have seen where the water can actually be used several times (over several days).  Such a system has filters (used to filter out debris) and UV-germ-killing equipment, which allows the water to be recycled and put through a loop system (until it is discarded).  The heating system that I would choose is an electric system (electric-based water system).  I have to report that a recirculating shower would involve soap, of course.  I have not looked to see what type of soap--bar soap--would work best with the filter system of a recirculating shower.  Incidentally, the document of April 10, 2025, does not go well into toilet systems, and composting systems and incinerating systems are two of the systems that can be used.  At the moment, I am still leaning toward an incinerating system, which is why I want a camper van to have a high amount of electricity generation, such as through alternators and solar panels.  I have seen a bunch of videos about camper vans, and I have yet to see ones that have vans set up so that areas of sides of vans have window-like units that have--inside the vans--solar panels behind them so that more solar panels (beyond some of the roof of the van) can regularly work to charge up battery systems.  Yes, fewer window areas reduces direct sunlight from getting in the van, but a window-and-solar-panel setup could be designed with insulation around it in the inside, which would keep that camper van warm in tough conditions, such as over several days of temperatures between -25 F and -1 F.  Oh, I say--Always make things so that they can easily be replaced or worked on.  Is it possible to have a 2,500-watt solar-panel system set up on a regular-sized camper van, involving solar panels on the roof and on the sides (the side ones being safely set up behind window-like things)?  Since battery systems are better than they were fifty years ago, could it not be possible to have a camper van set up with enough battery power to last for days, even if it had a 12-volt air conditioner, a refrigerator (running on electricity), an incinerating toilet, a water heater (running on electricity), and a living-area heater (running on electricity)?  I like the idea of having a camper van over a travel trailer, since only one moving unit is involved, and it seems to me that an old small bus (originally constructed with a bunch of windows all the way around) might make a good candidate for reworking into a camper van, allowing a bunch of solar panels to be set up inside behind windows (which get set up to be water-tight for years and which are not designed to be opened up).  [To see Michigan Travel Tips #252, click on this T.H.A.T. #252 link.]

So that is the introduction to this edition of Michigan Travel Tips.

I start with a little reminder, the making of which started out as a reminder to me by seeing the "Bay College Art Gallery" listing in my files recently.  The heading was made decades ago, and since the heading was made, Bay College, which is at Escanaba, has ended up with more than one gallery.  Today, the college has three galleries, and one is called the Hartwig Art Gallery, which was opened in 2000.  The other galleries are the Besse Center South Gallery and the Bay College West Gallery.  If you happen to get to Escanaba, you might see if Bay College is open so that you can tour an art gallery or two.  There is more art at the college than there was years ago, and the galleries when open have special exhibits and regular exhibits, covering students in art and others.

Warning announcement!  Because of incidents at schools for children and incidents at other places for people in general tied to "Sharia" or "Islamic Law" or even the religion/political system known as "Islam," I now regularly have this paragraph as a part of each edition of Michigan Travel Tips.  The governmental system of the United States of America based on The U.S. Constitution and "Sharia" or, informally, Islamic law, are not compatible and cannot co-exist, and one reason is "Sharia" (et cetera) is a political system, in which there is one-party rule, and that one party is basically made up or controlled by religious leaders who base all the ways of their culture or society on "Sharia" or "Islamic Law."  Those who uphold and practice "Sharia" have no tolerance for the existence of Christianity or Buddhism or Hinduism or non-religion, and that is a fact, and "Sharia" is a political system in which women are second-rate human bodies and in which clergy can be involved in determining  business transactions, and there is no "freedom of speech" tied to politics in a society related to "Sharia."  When you travel around Michigan and in other states of the country, watch for signs that rotten people are trying to teach you or family members, especially children, that "Sharia" is good and "Allah" is good and teach you or family members that the United States of America is bad and that, for instance, Christianity and Buddhism and Hinduism are bad, which I have evidence is happening and which is being brought about by people who are clearly working to make "Sharia" a dominant political system in the world (it is a political system as rotten as socialism and fascism and communism are, since it promotes violence and thuggery and coercion, and it promotes killing of non-followers behind the face of religion and a god, Allah).  By the way, a society based on "Sharia" really creates nothing in the long run and does not advance the human society as a whole since it is too busy suppressing the ideas of people and keeping the ideas of the society based on ways of only a few minds up front (the political leaders), whose main purpose is to keep themselves enriched through the work of others, the many--it is a gang-run society really.  Yes, if you run across people pushing the idea that Muslim stuff--particularly the true The Quran and not the translations of The Quran that are faked to hide the true nature of Islam--is better than the U.S. is, especially to little children, go public and make it known to other good people and fight back against it.

When was the last time that you were told to take a hike (not in the good sense)?  That seems to be an old saying.  Does anybody say it anymore.  I can say it.  Go take a hike!  I will even tell you where to go.  Boy (I say in jest), could I tell you where to go, or, boy, would I like to tell you where to go.  Okay, let us keep this nice.  If you are in the the Battle Creek area and if a person tells you to take a hike, they might want you to go to the Ott Biological Preserve.  That is a place that is a little east of Battle Creek (of the Battle Creek area) and east of Brownlee Park of Battle Creek.  The preserve is a place covering about 298 acres, and it has two main lakes and some wetlands.  The place has been set up with some five miles of trails, portions of which are designated parts of known trail systems, such as the North County Trail.  In essence, the place is open throughout the year, but it seems to get the most use in warmer months of the year--it is used for hiking and biking mostly.  Soon the plants will be blooming again, and that is one place you might like to get lost in--I mean, like to hike or bike in on a weekend.  There are two parking areas for the Ott Biological Preserve.  Of course, I you get lost for decades and centuries at that place, you might end up "preserved" yourself.

Okay, let me backup to the opening paragraph proper of this document.  I would not like to have a truck with a pulled trailer, because there would be places that I could not go with it.  For instance, in the warmer days of the year, Cheboygan and other cities in the state have "farmers' markets" set up.  One such place is the farmers' market of Rockford, which is a city located a little north of Grand Rapids (of Kent County of the Lower Peninsula).  If it is as small as the market set up a Cheboygan every year, the two-unit vehicle would probably not be parked well right near the market.  A camper van--like that which I have in mind--could be parked easily near such a market.  I notice that the farmers' market of Rockford will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each Saturday from May 2, 2026, to October 31, 2026.  Do not expect to see any bananas at the farmers' market in Michigan this year, but that should not surprise you.

And I have one note for my files and for yours.  I have been hearing about lighthouses being sold off in recent years to private enterprises or persons.  I see that, in 2022, a family called the Harbourt family bought the Portage River Lighthouse, which is in the general Lake Linden area of the Keweenaw Peninsula of the Upper Peninsula.  It is private property now that cannot be visited regularly.  I found a website or webpage associated with the lighthouse, and it is reported on pages that the lighthouse is being renovated or restored.  People can see the lighthouse from a distance easily.  However, I found it noted that sometimes the lighthouse is open to the public on "open-house days."  But I have no information here about when there are "open-house days" scheduled for 2026 or beyond.  If you are really into seeing lighthouses, you might from time to time see if any information shows up on the Internet in relation to the owners of the Portage River Lighthouse having an "open house" that you could attend.

    Enjoy your traveling in Michigan!

    Stay well!

    Victor
